Propane Safety and Customer Resources

Your safety questions answered

We’ve put together some commonly asked questions to give you more information about our services. If you have a question that you can’t find the answer to, please contact us!

Propane is naturally odorless so distributors add ethyl mercaptan to make it smell like rotten eggs or sulfur. If you smell propane in or around your home or building, follow these procedures and guidelines:

  • Do not turn on or use anything that initiates a spark, such as: light switches, flashlights, electrical devices or phones.
  • Evacuate the building and property.
  • Call 911.
  • Call Bruceton Petroleum 800.371.9360.
  • If you are comfortable doing so, turn off the supply of propane to the cylinder or tank.
  • If you or someone in your home has a limited sense of smell, we recommend purchasing a propane gas alarm.

Propane is naturally odorless so distributors add ethyl mercaptan to create a rotten egg or sulfur smell. If you smell that, you may have a leak. Contact us asap and we’ll send a representative to inspect your set-up.

  • NFPA 54 5.7.3: Please keep regulators clear of all bushes, plants, and boxes so we can safely access your system.
  • NFPA 58 6.4.2.3: All tanks must be at least 10 feet from all buildings and property lines.
  • NFPA 58 6.4.4.3: All tanks must be at least 5 feet from doors, windows, crawl space venting, and 10 feet from any source of ignition such as electrical outlets, generators, septic well alarms, AC units, and panel boxes.
  • NFPA 6.5.2.3: No buildings (ex: sheds) should be built overtop mounded or underground tanks. Should we need to remove the tank in an emergency, it must be accessible.
  • NFPA 58 6.6.3.3: Combustible materials (ex: gasoline for lawnmowers) should not be stored within 10 feet of a propane tank.
  • NFPA 58 6.8.2.2: Propane tanks should not be in direct contact with the soil. The can cause rusting due to moisture, which can lead to an eventual leak.
  • NFPA 37 4.2: Generators must be supported on noncombustible foundations (please note: TREX decking IS combustible, therefore making it not suitable for a generator foundation).

Sixty million Americans a year use propane to make their lives more comfortable. More versatile than electric heat, propane can be used to power so many things:

  • Home heating
  • On demand water heating
  • Barbecuing
  • Heating your garage or extra rooms
  • Swimming pools
  • Hot tubs
  • Stoves or ovens
  • Fireplaces
  • Clothes dryers
  • Much more!
Propane Is Versatile

Propane is cheaper than electricity. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating a home with propane over the last few years has cost significantly less than with electricity, and in most cases, about half as much, on average. And, over time, propane water heaters can cost one-third less to operate and recover water twice as quickly as electric water heaters.

  • Propane is warmer than electricity. A propane gas furnace heats to about 130° to 140° and operates in short intervals to minimize operating costs. An electric heat pump produces heat below body temperature, so the air actually feels cooler when placing your hand in front of a vent.
  • Propane systems are more durable. Propane-fueled furnaces last 5 to 10 years longer than electric heat pumps, on average.
  • Propane is more dependable than electric. Propane can be stored safely in a tank on your property; electricity is subject to power outages.
  • With propane, what you see is what you get. While electricity is measured in hard-to-understand "kilowatt hours", propane is measured in familiar "gallons."
  • Propane is clean-burning, non-toxic, has built-in safety properties and stringent safety regulations. As a propane customer, you can feel real peace of mind.
